How to acquire it

Your MTN eSIM setup, step by step

The eSIM journey is simple, but it still requires an in-person activation and SIM registration at MTN.

1

Check your phone

Dial *#06# before you travel. If your phone shows an EID number, it supports eSIM. Also confirm the phone is unlocked for other networks.

2

Visit an MTN store

MTN Nigeria currently activates eSIM in store. Bring your passport or valid ID, your eSIM-capable phone, and enough time for SIM registration.

3

Scan the QR code

MTN customer care will issue a QR code after activation. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, scan the code, and install the eSIM profile before leaving the store.

4

Buy a data plan

Choose a current MTN bundle through *312#, *904#, myMTN, MTN web, Zigi, or an MTN retail channel. Prices change, so confirm the bundle at purchase.

What to bring

Unlocked eSIM-compatible phone

Valid passport or government-issued ID

Hotel address or local contact details for registration support

Wi-Fi or temporary data access for QR profile download

Payment method for your preferred MTN data bundle

Device compatibility

Most flagship phones released from 2019 onward support eSIM, but the fastest check is still on your own device.

iPhone XS, XR, 11 and newer models
Google Pixel 3 and newer models
Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer flagship models
Recent Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, and other eSIM-ready devices

Quick check

Dial *#06#

If an EID number appears, your phone can usually install an eSIM profile.

Choosing a bundle

Pick the plan length around your stay

Check current MTN plans

1-7 days

Short visit

Use daily, 2-day, or weekly bundles if your trip is built around airport pickup, WhatsApp, maps, ride-hailing, and light browsing.

2-4 weeks

Holiday stay

Monthly bundles work better for Detty December, work trips, family visits, and travelers who will use hotspot for laptops or tablets.

2-12 months

Longer stay

Bi-monthly, quarterly, and yearly bundles are better for returnees, remote workers, students, and extended family stays.

Use the QR once

Treat your QR code like a private login. Do not share it or post screenshots.

Finish in store

Test browsing and calls with MTN staff before leaving the store.

Plan for arrival

Save directions, accommodation details, and a contact number before your flight.

Before you leave the store

Keep your home SIM active if you need bank OTPs or WhatsApp continuity.
Do not leave the store until calls, data, and hotspot have been tested.
If your phone is not eSIM-ready, ask MTN for a physical SIM with the same registration process.
Save the MTN store location and customer care details before moving around the city.
