About
Rising above Abeokuta, Olumo Rock is one of southwestern Nigeria's best-known natural landmarks.
The granite formation is deeply connected to the history of the Egba people and to the origins of Abeokuta, whose name is commonly translated as "under the rock."
History & Cultural Significance
During the wars of the 19th century, the rock provided a natural refuge for Egba communities. Its height gave people a strategic view over the surrounding landscape, while its caves offered places of shelter.
Over time, Olumo became more than a defensive landmark. It came to represent survival, unity and resilience in Egba history.
