About
Arochukwu was one of the most influential political and commercial centres of precolonial southeastern Nigeria. At the centre of its history was Ibini Ukpabi, an oracle also known as the Long Juju.
The cave and surrounding landscape became an important spiritual and judicial centre for the Aro and communities across the region.
History & Cultural Significance
The Aro network became deeply involved in regional trade and political relationships across southeastern Nigeria and beyond. The oracle played a major role in dispute settlement and religious life.
The history of Arochukwu is also inseparable from the history of the transatlantic slave trade and the conflicts that eventually led to the Anglo-Aro War of 1901–1902.
The British expedition destroyed the original shrine complex, but the site and its associated stories remain important parts of Aro history.
